More than ever, we recognize the important contributions of Martin Luther King, Jr. in regard to the civil rights movement. In 1994, Congress passed the King Holiday and Service Act, designating the Martin Luther King Jr. Federal Holiday. MLK Day (Monday, January 16, 2023) is the only federal holiday designated as a National Day of Service to encourage all Americans to volunteer to improve their communities

  There are several events around Rhode Island's Blackstone Valley to celebrate & honor the legacy of the great Martin Luther King, Jr., and to provide opportunities to be of service to our community.
Keep Blackstone Valley Beautiful, in partnership with the Town of Lincoln Clean Up Crew will host a Front Street Litter Clean up. Here are a few other opportunities in conjunction with the Blackstone River Valley National Heritage Corridor Volunteer in Parks program.
  • Hearthside Museum, Lincoln is getting ready for a ceiling plastering project and needs help moving their Christmas decorations and the contents of their storage room in the attic to another room so this project can begin. This project will be indoors and heated.
  • Woonsocket Historical Society, Woonsocket, could use some help organizing boxes of Christmas decorations that are in storage.
  • Mammoth Mill, North Smithfield, 9 am - 12 pm - North Smithfield Heritage Association could use some help to pick up trash at the Mammoth Mill Park on Mill Street, North Smithfield They will also pick up trash along the Blackstone Canal on Canal Street.
