‘Twas the Night: A Celebration of the 200th Anniversary of the Classic Poem

December 12, 2023 @ 6:30 pm - 9:30 pm

Over the past two centuries, ‘Twas the Night Before Christmas has charmed and delighted families, generation after generation. Just the name of the poem brings about a sense of nostalgia, with images of Santa and the magic and wonder of the “Night Before Christmas” stirring the imagination of believers and non-believers alike.

This iconic poem, first published in 1823 by Clement Clark Moore, remains the most well-known and most often read, recited, republished and illustrated work in the library of English literature. It has influenced the image of Santa Claus as a sleigh-riding, chimney-diving jolly old elf that we know so well today.

The Friends of Hearthside is celebrating the Bicentennial of the poem with a special evening on Tuesday, December 12th that is steeped in history and festivities. They are most delighted to welcome guest author Pamela McColl on her national book tour for “The Art & History of ‘Twas the Night.”

The two-part event is held at both Hearthside and across the street at the Butterfly Mill, both of which were built by Stephen Hopkins Smith over 200 years ago. The evening begins at 6:30 pm at Hearthside where guests will enjoy the house all decked out in twinkling trees and beautiful holiday decorations throughout three floors. Then with everyone aglow with the holiday spirit, the festivities continue across the street at the recently-restored Butterfly Mill. Greeting everyone at the Mill will be children from the Pullen’s Corner Schoolhouse singing carols. Inside awaits a sumptuous display of appetizers and treats—“The Twelve Tastes of Christmas”—along with a traditional Wassail bowl. Both alcoholic and non-alcoholic drinks are offered.

“The Art & History of ‘Twas the Night” is an outstanding work of art and literature. This keepsake book, written by Pamela McColl, features an alluring history and examination about the poem, provides deeper understanding of Christmas culture, and is accompanied throughout with colorful images and illustrations. At the reception, McColl will give an engaging presentation about some of the topics in her book including the origins of St. Nicholas and the cultural customs tied to Christmas, as well as the controversies over Clement Clark Moore’s writing of the poem. Moore also happened to live in Rhode Island for the last years of his life. Nicole Gonzalez Van Clive, owner of the Butterfly House & Mill, will host and moderate the discussion. And of course, an evening based on ‘Twas the Night would not be complete without a reading of the holiday’s most famous poem.

Hearthside’s Gift Shop has available for purchase a selection of the 200th Anniversary books, including “The Art & History of ‘Twas the Night Before Christmas,” as well as the children’s version of ‘Twas the Night in hard cover, soft cover and a toddler board book. All of these books are keepsakes and make wonderful gifts. They will be available during the event, and at the other Hearthside events held the first two weekends in December.
