The History & Art of Silhouettes
March 12, 2023 @ 1:00 pm - 3:00 pm
Before photographs became widely available, the most popular and inexpensive way to capture an image was through silhouettes, created by cutting profiles from black paper. Victorian era silhouettes included scenes of family life, children’s play, animals, and nature. All that was needed was black and white paper, a pair of scissors, and glue.
The rich history of the ancient art of silhouettes is explored at the Pullen’s Corner Schoolhouse at Chase Farm Park on Sunday, March 12th between 1-3 p.m.
In this unique experience from the past, participants ages 6 to adults, will learn the history of this art form that goes back to Egyptian times, and get to create their own silhouette art or use patterns that will be provided. Children may choose simple cutouts for beginning scissor-use skills, while adults may choose more intricate pictures.
This event is recommended for children ages six and older as well as for adults. All children must be accompanied by an adult. The $10 fee covers the cost for the participant and materials, payable upon arrival in Cash Only. An adult accompanying child but not participating is free. Space is limited so online registration is required through the link below. Select time at either 1:00 or 2:00 p.m. for the one-hour sessions.
The Pullen’s Corner Schoolhouse is Lincoln’s last remaining one-room school. It is fully-restored and part of the Great Road Heritage Campus located at Chase Farm Park, 671 Great Road, Lincoln. All proceeds benefit the efforts of the volunteer organization Friends of Hearthside to bring history to life at the town-owned historic sites.
