Salute to Flag Day, Mill Tours and Blacksmith Demos at at Chase Farm Park

June 9 @ 12:30 pm - 3:30 pm

On June 9, 12:30-3:30, the Pullen’s Corner Schoolhouse at Chase Farm Park in Lincoln will hold a special celebration of Flag Day. Historic American flags, regimental flags, and state flags, will be displayed inside and outside the schoolhouse. Volunteer Kirk Hindman, whose collection is on display, will provide the interesting background and history of these flags.

Besides just learning about the flags, there will be activities for both kids and adults to enjoy.   A special scavenger hunt involving the pictures and designs that are on the flags, along with a theme related craft activity will also be offered.

Members of the American Legion, Cumberland Post #14, will present a flag retiring ceremony at 1:00 and 2:00. They will explain how to properly dispose of old flags. Visitors are invited to also bring old American flags for the American Legion to retire.

Visitors will learn the historic reasons for celebrating our country’s flags in this special program.  Throughout the late 1800s and into the 1900s Flag Day was celebrated in schoolhouses across the country. Songs were sung and poetry was recited by school children. In 1889, the Department of Education declared officially that Flag Day should be observed along with Washington and Lincoln’s birthdays.  There is a $5 admission per family, group, or person. Register at www.greatroadheritagecampus.org.

In addition to the program at the schoolhouse, the nearby Moffett Mill will be open for tours.  Built in 1812, this rare relic is “frozen in time” with original equipment still in place as it was when the business closed around 1900.  The Mill is only accessible by the Great Road Heritage Campus shuttle van which will operate from Chase Farm Park.  Admission is $5/person. Tours are timed entry and space limited so advance registration is advised at www.greatroadheritagecampus.org. Also open on June 9th is the Hannaway Blacksmith Shop where demonstrations of metal being heated and formed into useful and decorative objects offer another point of interest in a visit to the Great Road Heritage Campus at Chase Farm Park.

Programming at these town-owned buildings is offered by the volunteers of the Friends of Hearthside as a way of sharing history and raising funds for the care and preservation of these historic treasures.  Chase Farm Park is located at 671 Great Road, Lincoln.
