Mowry Conservation Area Hike

June 18, 2022 @ 10:00 am - 12:00 pm

Come Join the WRWC on a  hike of the one-mile loop at Mowry Conservation Area – it’s short and serene, and just so Rhode Island.  There is a steep section going up to the ledge trail, so sturdy boots are suggested. The 44 acres was given to the town of Smithfield by S. Burton and Mary Mowry, who had owned the Mowry farm on that property since 1845. It features a stocked trout stream, towering hemlocks and pines, a arching footbridge, a picnic area, many stonewalls (stonework that remains from the 18th century forge and sawmill), and the remains of an old stone dam. Woodland creatures abound in this quaint little pocket of RI history and nature. For those interested in a bit more hiking – we’ll cross Old Forge and follow the Woonasquatucket River to the spot where it flows into Stump Pond and then up to a great viewing area and to the back entrance of Revive the Roots (a working farm). This hike offers on-road parking only.
