Hearthside’s Summer Celebration

July 22, 2018 @ 11:00 am - 4:00 pm

Featured at Hearthside throughout the grounds will be historical interpreters and military re-enactors, including Civil War, Revolutionary War, Pokonoket Indians, World War I, World War II, a Roman soldier, all who are ready to answer questions and pose for photos.

Inside the museum visitors will be treated to an award-winning exhibit of antique hand-painted photographs. The extensive collection of unique photographs were actually taken at Hearthside in 1907-1915 by David Davidson of Providence and displayed in the same location they were taken in. Also on display is the camera Davidson took the photos with, the shawl worn in some of the photos, and numerous artifacts from his studio. Costumed docents will be available during the self-guided tours throughout the house. Last museum admission is at 3:00 p.m.

A special lecture about Davidson and his artwork by Michael Pellegrino, noted expert and collector of early 20th century hand-painted photography will be held at 1:30 p.m. Other outdoor features at Hearthside include old-time selfie photos in the gazebo, kids activities, refreshment stand, and sale of home-baked goods.

The Friends of Hearthside, the all-volunteer organization that operates the museum as well as the other historic sites next door at Chase Farm Park, is announcing the completion of the restoration and furnishing of Pullen’s Corner Schoolhouse, also known as the one-room “Hot Potato Schoolhouse.” Visitors will be invited by the teacher to experience what attending this 19th century school was like for children from area farms. Lincoln’s last remaining one-room schoolhouse was relocated to Chase Farm Park a few years ago by the Town. The original Hannaway Blacksmith Shop, located to the entrance to Chase Farm Park, will be open and offer demonstrations of the traditional craft of hand forging.

The Town of Lincoln is also celebrating the newly-completed Visitors Center with a ribbon-cutting ceremony at 12 noon by officials from the RI Department of Environmental Management and the Town of Lincoln. The public is invited to the ceremony and to come experience the beauty and history of this former dairy farm as well as the historical, cultural and recreational resources it offers to residents and visitors alike. The Visitors Center provides a gathering spot for picnics or meetings, restroom facilities, and garages for the maintenance vehicles for the park. The project was funded through a grant from the RI Department of Environmental Management and the Town of Lincoln. The Visitors Center is located behind the Hannaway Blacksmith Shop and next to the one-room schoolhouse.

Various activities will be held in the Park until 2:30, including a fishing derby, kids’ games, and organizational displays. The Town will host the second of its summer concert series at the park from 4-8 p.m, with a performance by Next Stop and a variety of food trucks on site.

The Summer Celebration event offers free admission throughout the day from 11-4 at Hearthside and from 11-2:30 at Chase Farm Park. Hearthside is located at 677 Great Road, Lincoln and Chase Farm Park at 671 Great Road. For more information, info@hearthsidehouse.org or 401-726-0597. www.hearthsidehouse.org.
