March 21, 2019 @ 9:00 pm

DEREK HOLZER is a sound + light artist based in Helsinki & Berlin, whose current interests include DIY electronics, audiovisual instrument building, the relationship between sound and space, media archaeology, and participatory art forms. He has performed live, taught workshops and created scores of unique instruments and installations since 2002 across Europe, North and South America, and New Zealand.

VICTORIA SHEN is a visual artist and musician hailing from San Francisco and working out of New England. Shen’s sound practice is concerned with the spatiality/physicality of sound and its relationship to the human body. Shen’s music floods its location acting as a form of sculpture. Her music features analog modular synthesizers (Flower Electronics), contact microphones, and other hand-built electronics. These instruments are designed to electronically reproduce chaotic systems, systems which are highly sensitive to small changes in their initial parameters. The resulting music eschews conventions in harmony and rhythm in favor of the extreme textures and gestural tones. Shen has performed solo across North America, Western Europe, and Japan as Victoria Shen and under the pseudonym Evicshen as well as with the duo TRIM in North America and the UK. She has also been an artist in residence at Elektronmusikstudion EMS Stockholm, Sweden and WORM Rotterdam Netherlands.

ANDREA PENSADO obtained her BA in Music Education from the University of La Plata (Argentina) in 1987. Immediately following, she moved to Poland where she continued her studies at the Krakow Academy of Music. In 1997, she moved back to Buenos Aires. In 1998, she cofounded an interdisciplinary duo (Qfwfq) along, with Gregory Kowalski (in charge of the images). While still in Buenos Aires, the duo often worked with the collaboration of solo performers (Martín Moore, Lucio Capece, Adriana de los Santos). They presented their work in many events in Buenos Aires, including the Cycle of Electronic and Experimental Music (in the Museum of Modern Art); the International Sound Art Festival EXPERIMENTA; the Cycle of Contemporary Music at the San Martin Theatre; the Experimental Video Festival (in the Museum of Fine Arts) and the Ricardo Rojas Arts Center. In 2002, Pensado moved to the USA. At first, she continued performing with Qfwfq, mainly in the Boston area. The duo channeled most of her artistic work from 1999 to 2009. Presently, Pensado performs extensively in the US, both as a solo artist and in frequent collaborations with other musicians. Her more stable groups at this moment are: PHURNNE (with Jenifer Gelineau and Stephanie Marie Germaine) and LOS CONDENADOS (with Walter Wright, Chris Strunk and Jules Vasylenko). She continues using Max as her main programming tool. The approach to programming and performance is highly intuitive. Occasionally, the combination of the performance situation, the often abrasive sounds, the irrational use of the voice and the inherent uncertainty of improvisations contributes to discoveries of unknown places in her mind.

Cetilia / Greenlee (duo)

MARK CETILIA is a sound / media artist working at the nexus of analog and digital technologies. Exploring the possibilities of generative systems in art, design, and sound practice, Cetilia’s work is an exercise in carefully controlled chaos. He is a member of the media art group Redux, recipients of a Creative Capital grant in Emerging Fields, and the electroacoustic ensemble Mem1, described by The Grove Dictionary of American Music as “a complex cybernetic entity” whose “evolving, custom-built systems are as important an aspect of the duo’s achievements as their ever-innovative sound.” Cetilia holds a Ph.D (Computer Music + Multimedia) from Brown University, and an MFA (Digital + Media) from the Rhode Island School of Design; he teaches classes on art, technology and sound at RISD and Hampshire College. His sound works have been published by Interval, Radical Matters, Dragon’s Eye, and Estuary Ltd., which he runs with his partner Laura.

SHAWN GREENLEE is a composer and sound artist. In recent work, Greenlee focuses on generating digital audio from graphic patterns. Via computer programs of his own design, he advances new methods for interpreting visual image as sound (graphic synthesis). Further areas evident in his work include electroacoustic improvisation, spatial audio, and noise. With Joel Kyack and Dan St. Jacques, Greenlee is a founding member of Landed, active since 1997 and known for its deconstructed rock, rhythmic noise, and physically intense live performances. Greenlee is Associate Professor at the Rhode Island School of Design (RISD).
