Cyanotypes – One-Day Workshop

September 10, 2022 @ 10:00 am - 2:00 pm

Location: RIWS Classroom (Lower Level of Gallery)

Instructor: Kathleen Hannan and Cynthia DiDonato

Date: Saturday, September 10th, or RAIN DATE Sunday, September 11th

Time: 10am- 2pm

Are you interested in learning a new printing technique? Then this basic workshop is for you.

A cyanotype is an alternate form of printmaking. It is a contact print made by placing an object on UV sensitive paper and then exposing the paper to sunlight. The UV light causes a chemical reaction in the exposed areas of the paper. Any areas not exposed to sunlight stay white.

Cyanotypes were discovered by Sir John Herschel in 1842. Anna Atkins, a family friend of the Herschel family handprinted several albums of botanical and textile specimens. Her book “Photographs of British Algae: Cyanotype Impressions” was the world’s first photographically illustrated book.
