Central Falls is named for a waterfall on the Blackstone River where in the mid-eighteenth century Benjamin Smith built a snuff mill, and where in 1811 Captain Stephen Jenks built a blacksmith shop and was contracted to produce muskets for the United States government. It was Stephen who would choose the name Central Falls for the town. On this tour we’ll learn how the area went from wilderness to a busy industrial city, and about the people who made it happen. We’ll start in Jenks Park by the Cogswell Tower. This 90-minute tour is free, but we ask that you RSVP, either on this event, by calling 725.9581, or by emailing pawtucketpreservation@gmail.com
