Rafay Rashid Album Release with NOVA ONE and EDT
July 21, 2023 @ 8:00 pm - July 22, 2023 @ 12:00 am
Rafay Rashid
Rafay Rashid, born in Islamabad, Pakistan and based in Providence, Rhode Island, makes experimental pop songs that are confessional, ecstatic, and confrontational. His writing emerges as a response to growing up a Muslim kid in a post 9/11 America. Ravi Shavi, the name of his band, became a persona and vehicle for both radical healing and punk empowerment as he crafted a niche amidst the experimental noise and folk music scenes of Providence, Rhode Island in the late 00’s. Since then, he has cut his teeth touring independently throughout the past decade opening for such acts as Charles Bradley, Of Montreal, Man Man, Budos Band, Los Lobos and the Black Lips. In addition to fronting Ravi Shavi, he has been the featured performer at the 2017 Whitney Biennial Gala, the Rockbund Art Museum in Shanghai, the 2021 Newport Folk Festival and writes and performs with 3/4ths of Deer Tick in their side project, Happiness, which released a full-length album in 2019 called “Live”. Rashid will be performing music from his solo debut, “Kitchen Weapons”, a piano-based break-up album set to release on 5/26/2023 via Brooklyn based Almost Ready Records.
NOVA ONE
Nova One makes lush, dreamy music that celebrates and centers vulnerability, self-love, self-expression, and queer futurity. This Providence-based band performs songs from their newest LP, create myself (Community Records), celebrating self-acceptance, becoming, and inviting each of us to find our own voices and see ourselves with compassion and love.
EDT
EDT is dreamy oceanic cello and voice songs from Providence, RI. Their debut album It was a wave, of course – out now on Pretty Purgatory – is made up of songs of longing, songs of grief, songs of fading borders between people, gender, and the natural world.
